BEI performs bridge scour assessments and drainage impact analyses for new bridge design, bridge replacements, hydraulic certification, and regulatory approval. Studies are developed in accordance with FHWA Hydraulic Engineering Circular No. 18 (HEC-18) and TxDOT hydraulic design requirements.
Scope of Services
Bridge Scour Analysis
- Contraction scour: live-bed and clear-water analysis (HEC-18 methods)
- Local pier scour: CSU and Melville equations, complex pier configurations
- Local abutment scour: Froehlich and HIRE equations
- Total scour depth determination and foundation adequacy evaluation
- Long-term bed degradation and channel instability assessment
- Scour countermeasure design: riprap aprons, guide banks, and pier collars
- Hydraulic model development and backwater computation at bridge crossings
Drainage Impact Analysis (DIA)
- Pre- and post-development peak flow comparison across design storm frequencies (2-, 10-, 25-, 100-year)
- Roadway overtopping analysis and culvert hydraulic adequacy
- FHWA HEC-22 inlet design for roadway drainage systems
- TxDOT hydraulic design manual compliance documentation
- FEMA floodplain no-rise certifications for roadway and bridge projects
- Coordination with TxDOT, HCFCD, and local drainage authorities
